The printmaking studio provides a fully equipped working environment for many talented artists who are encouraged to produce original and creative prints of high quality.

The Warringah Printmakers Studio runs printmaking classes and weekend workshops throughout the year.

On display at this current exhibition are traditional, centuries old techniques of woodcut (which goes as far back as the 5th century), lithography and etching.

Not quite as old (linoleum did not appear until 1860) are linocuts which have gained popularity, no small thanks to Picasso.

Also on show are the more modern techniques of photopolymer intaglio and waterless lithography.

For further information about the Studio please check their website at: www.printstudio.org.au or call: (02) 9949 2325.

There is a social network site for members and friends of Warringah Printmakers Studio at: www.printstudio.ning.com

In Nature. In Glass.

Opening on 17 April at Craft NSW is an exhibition of flame worked glass by members of the Society of Arts and Crafts together with eight invited guest artists.

Flame working is an art that fascinates the artist and amazes the viewer and this exhibition promises to do both.

Currently enjoying a revival, flameworking is a centuries old

technique of making glass beads and other objects.

Traditional methods involved the use of oil-fired lamps, hence the name 'lampworking'.

Even though lamps and bellows have been replaced by propane and oxygen fuelled torches the magic remains the same.

Glass is heated in the flame of the torch until molten and is then

manipulated using heat, gravity and/or tools. In the case of beads the glass is wound around a mandrel which is removed after annealing, leaving a hole through the bead.

The last 20 years has seen a resurgence of interest and an explosion of techniques in the flameworking world, and there are many Australian flameworkers making beads, marbles, paperweights, and pipes - all manner of both decorative and functional objects

Most bead makers work with soft glass, so called because it has a relatively low melting point.

Soft glass has a wonderful palette of colours to choose from and while great for making beads it is difficult to master the art of using it for sculptural and free form work because of its low melting point and tendency to shock and crack when reheated.

For sculptural work most flameworkers use hard glass, or borosilicate, because it has a much higher melting point and is much

Wall Hangings
for the Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital
image 013

The commissioned wall hangings (titled The Water, The Valley, The City, The Land) are finally complete.

The designs for the four wall hangings reflect aspects of the Hunter Valley; the beaches and waterways and the recreational side of the water that surrounds us; the valley and what the bush might speak to us of; the city and its industry and how we might find ourselves reflected in it; the

land and and how it has been the lifeblood of the Hunter.

Each of the designs is stylized and layered because there are many layers of meaning for each of us in the Hunter. We each come to this place with our own stories and experiences.

What binds us together in this community is our search for connectedness and meaning.

The wall hangings are appliqued, hand coloured and free machine quilted. All are 1 x 2m.
