Welcome to The Society of Arts and Crafts of new south wales

Jo Ann Hopkins

Marquetry has been used for hundreds of years to decorate furniture and panels. It flourished in the 1500’s in Europe.

The vast array of veneers available now makes it possible for me to take advantage of the grain and colour to fashion leaves or make patterns.

I study botanical art, so I can use my designs on the boxes.  I need only look outside to be inspired by nature.

Whenever possible, I use wood that I have salvaged to make the boxes – often oak that has been used in wine making.

The craft of marquetry is intricate, precise, and exacting but it is a joy to see the result.
