Collage "Volcanic scree near Grandpa Mountain, Japan", by Jan Spencer

Collage "Volcanic scree near Grandpa Mountain, Japan", by Jan Spencer. Oil crayon collage on artboard, sealed with archival varnish (signed, d rings and hanger) 25x20cm
This collage is inspired by drawings made while walking in Japan in the northern and central mountains west of Tokyo. We ascended the mountain arriving at a rocky, scree covered plain, I stopped drawing my partner on the path, as we turned towards Grandpa Mountain. He’s a grandfather too.
Jan documents her trips in travel diaries, drawing and collaging en plein air and uses these sketches to work up her collages in her Sydney studio.
The collages are made using oil crayons on coloured papers which are torn or scored into shapes, pasted on art board and sealed with varnish. The thick dense crayon plays with the torn edges of the coloured papers.
