Sylvia Riley is a designer, painter and dyer. Her practice focuses on resist dyeing techniques such as shibori, batik, gutta resist. In the last 8 years her practice has moved to include natural dyeing using tannin transfer with eucalyptus leaves and mordant printing where the colour from plants is manipulated using mordants.
Sylvia is strongly drawn to nature and draws inspiration from the shapes and patterns within nature, as well as the colourants naturally found in nature. Experimenting and combining techniques is a focus in her work. This experimentation leads to a constantly evolving body of work, with interpretations manifested in wearable art and decor.
