Gabby Malpas- Ceramics
As a Chinese adoptee raised by white parents, I consider and challenge the western tradition of Chinoiserie with my own narrative. The resulting, joyful and celebratory works have stories that draw you in for a closer look.
I returned to ceramics in 2020, 34 years after graduating with a major in Ceramics from the Dunedin Art School in 1986. I was finally ready.
My ceramics are a blend of western and Chinese shapes and aesthetics: reclaiming my heritage later in life and drawing on my strong NZ art school roots, my works are adaptations of Chinese altar and temple wares using available materials in Australia and with a touch of whimsy and cheekiness that many Kiwis and Aussies possess and love.
A proud maximalist, I currently live and work on unceded lands of the Gadigal people, of the Eora Nation. Gabby Malpas
